UCL Publishers’ Prize for Young Adult Fiction: Terms and Conditions

Eligibility:

  • The UCL Publishers’ Prize for Young Adult Fiction (hereafter, the “YA Prize”) is open to all current students enrolled at University College London (UCL) in the 2015-2016 academic year, including undergraduates, post-graduates, and part-time students.
  • Writers whose entries were shortlisted and published in any previous UCL Publishers’ Prize anthology are not eligible to enter this year’s YA Prize.
  • Works submitted to last year’s Prize (UCL Publishers’ Prize for Student Writing) are not eligible and may not be resubmitted.
  • Writers cannot submit the same piece of work to both the UCL Publishers’ Prize for Student Writing 2015-2016 and The YA Prize 2015-2016.
  • All entrants must submit their own works on their own behalf.
  • All entries must:
          1. Be original to the sole author;
          2. be targeted at young adult readers (age 14-24);
          3. not be previously published or scheduled for publication before 1st May 2016, including self-publication on any website, blog, social media platform or forum;
          4. not be currently under consideration elsewhere, including any other competitions;
          5. be written in English;
          6. be a maximum of 4,000 words, without minimum limits;
          7. and not be extracts from larger works.

 

Entries which do not fit these criteria will be disqualified.

 

Submission:

  • Writers may submit up to three entries each in total.
  • All entries must be submitted:
          1. Digitally, in .doc or .docx format, typed, and double spaced;
          2. to uclpublishersprizeYA@gmail.com with the following subject: SURNAME_YAPRIZE
          3. files should be saved with the same rubric ‘SURNAME_YAPRIZE’
          4. with a cover page specifying the author’s name, department, student number, email address, and the name of the work;
          5. with all pages numbered.
  • Amendments cannot be made to entries after they have been submitted, nor substitutions made.
  • All entries must be submitted before 11.59 pm (23:59) on Friday 29th January 2016.
  • Once we receive the submission, a confirmation email will be sent.
  • The YA Prize cannot accept responsibility for entries not received, or received after the submission close date, due to technological failures or any other reason.

 

Judging:

  • The shortlist of stories for publication will be decided by the committee of the YA Prize.
  • The winners of the prizes, and any other commendations, will be decided by the committee in consultation with guest judges from the publishing industry. To be announced.
  • The decisions of both the committee and the judges are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • The winners and shortlisted writers will be notified by email in March 2016.
  • The shortlisted stories will be published in a physical anthology to be sold in retailers.

 

Copyright:

  • Copyright of each entry will remain with the author of the work.
  • By submitting, entrants grant the committee of the YA Prize:
          1. The non-exclusive, unrestricted, royalty-free right of publication in both physical and digital forms and any promotional material for The YA Prize and any future Prizes, in the event of being shortlisted;
          2. the right to edit the format and layout of the text and amend spelling and grammar, in consultation with the author, in the event of being shortlisted.

 

Miscellaneous:

  • The YA Prize reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions or cancel the competition at any time without notice.
  • By submitting an entry, all entrants agree to the above terms and conditions.
